Stock markets around the world took a battering

Stock markets around the world took a battering as London's main index closed down for the 10th day in a row and US shares retreated

The FTSE 100 of leading blue-chip shares in the UK sunk into the red for a record-breaking losing streak, ending down 18.5 points at 3,603.7

Over the last 10 days, the index has shed about 9% of its value and dropped to its lowest level since December 1995

Across in the US the mood was not much better as the Dow Jones Industrial Average haemorrhaged 238.5 points, nearly 3%, to close at 8,131

The Dow has hit a three-month low, while the Nasdaq is at its lowest level in almost a month

Fears of a war with Iraq were weighing on traders, already worn down by months of bearish conditions

The big story isn't the 10 day-long drop on the FTSE 100 - it's the latest big fall on the Dow Jones index

More gloom in the air

There are likely to be many more days of steep falls on the Dow - and experts say we should welcome them.

Dealers say we won't see a long-term recovery in markets on either side of the Atlantic until the Dow loses another substantial chunk of value - bringing it into line with the losses we've already suffered in the UK.

But there's one problem.

Every time the Dow drops 200 points, we usually throw another 70-100 points off the sledge.

Instead of bringing the markets closer together - and closer to recovery - the Dow's decline just sends us lower too.

And it's anyone's guess when this cycle of misery will be broken.
